ARTIST’S TIP

Care must be taken when using masking tape, because if it is left on too long or is too sticky, it may damage the paper. If you cannot obtain low-tack tape, you can remove some of the glue by sticking the tape onto the back of your hand and pulling it off.

Impressing

The basic principle of impressing is that of making a mark that actually indents or grooves the surface of the paper. You can then work over it with gentle pencil shading (colored pencil or graphite) which glides across the impressed mark so that it remains visible through the color overlay. For a clean effect, the impressed line should be pushed down well below the paper surface, so place a newspaper beneath the drawing paper to allow some “give” when you begin to apply pressure.

The impression can be made with a hard, pointed instrument that marks the paper firmly, but is not sharp enough to tear it. A blunted stylus or the wooden end of a paintbrush could be used, for instance. This means that the impression shows itself as the paper color after you have shaded over it. Alternatively, you can make the same sort of “blind” impression by working on tracing paper laid over the drawing paper, using a stylus, hard pencil or ballpoint pen to apply heavy pressure.
